Fine Arts Center for Colorado Springs
_____________________________________________________________________________Since 1936, the Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs is a destination for more than residents of Colorado Springs CO real estate. Visitors also come from homes in Denver and Boulder, Castle Rock CO real estate to marvel alongside tourists from around the world. The Center cultivates arts education, theater, and art appreciation in one facility. Options abound for residents of Colorado Springs CO homes.
With unrivaled collections of American, Native American, and Hispanic art, the Center long ago outgrew its stunning Pueblo-style building, a feather in the cap of New Mexican architect John Gaw Meem.
Enter Denver architect David Owen Tryba in 2003. Unveiling a $25M-plus expansion in 2007, the Center now proudly showcases its impressive treasures once relegated to storage. The addition features nine permanent collection galleries, two traveling exhibition galleries, and an unprecedented tactile gallery while preserving the integrity of the original design.
The building is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Enlightening tours are led by dedicated volunteer Docents trained in the Fine Arts Center's history, architecture, permanent collection, current exhibitions, and theater. They tell the stories of Martha Graham dancing on the stage at the original grand opening and Frank Lloyd Wright lecturing in the hall.
And they reveal that the Center was founded in 1935 by visionary Alice Bemis Taylor. The Taylor Museum of the Fine Arts Center is committed to educating the public about the breadth of artistic expressions in the Americas. In addition, visitors enjoy the delicious cuisine presented with the visual flair befitting an art museum at the Cafe 36. From the restaurant's patio, the breathtaking views of Monument Valley Park and Pikes Park accent the extraordinary experience.
The Bemis School of Art offers courses for all ages and skill levels--from drawing, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, mosaics, jewelry making, art history, photography, and drama. New courses begin each January, June, and September. The school obtained seven new art studios and a new parking lot from the expansion.
Students also learn from the permanent and traveling collections. The 20,000-object permanent collection encompasses art of all media produced in the Americas. The collection is one of the strongest in the U.S. and contains diverse artistic Latin American works from three centuries, Mexican sculptures and works on paper, South American paintings, Guatemalan textiles, Southwestern Native American artifacts and jewelry, Navajo weavings, and much more. The Dale Chihuly glass collection is one of the largest in the world. And it's all in our own backyard.
