Visitors will immediately notice the huge 300-foot sandstone rock formations that tell ancient tales of prehistoric times. The formations are attributed to gradual movement of the earth over millions of years.
At the turn of the century, John Brisben Walker envisioned artists performing in the natural amphitheater and he produced a series of concerts between 1906 and 1910. In 1927, the City of Denver purchased the amphitheater and commissioned a Denver architect to design a permanent stage and seating. The new venue was dedicated in 1941 carrying on with many musical venues.
As one of the most beautiful concert venues in the world, the unique setting caught the attention of many big-name rock banks including the Beatles, U2, Grateful Dead, Rush, and Widespread Panic. Beginning with the 1964 Beatles concert, the Red Rock Amphitheater became a more popular destination. It was the favored venue for the Grateful Dead. And Widespread Panic holds the record for the most sellout performances (32 shows). U2 released a full concert-length video of their 1983 performance entitled, "Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky," and Rolling Stone Magazine called that performance one of the 50 Moments that Changed Rock and Roll.
Along with well-known names, the Red Rock Amphitheater is a traditional stop for many smaller jam bands and continues to host a variety of large events every year.
