Crown Hill Park in Wheat Ridge Colorado

Known for its sweeping mountain views, brilliant sunsets, miles of trails, wildlife sanctuary, and accessibility,
Crown Hill Park offers a peaceful respite from the bustle of Denver CO real estate and activity.  In fact, ninety percent of the visitors to Crown Hill Park sneak away from their west Denver homes in Arvada, Edgewater, Golden, Littleton CO real estate, Westminster and Wheat Ridge homes, and Lakewood CO real estate to enjoy the waterfowl, migratory birds, coyote, and fox near Crown Hill Lake and Kestrel Pond.

Crown Hill Park
is the most popular Open Space area in Jefferson County.  In 1991, the National Urban Wildlife Institute designated a portion of Crown Hill's 242 acres as a National Urban Wildlife Refuge.  A Wildlife Sanctuary in the northwest corner of the park offers additional protection for nesting migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and wildlife including amphibians and avian species.  Consequently, that area is closed from March 1 to June 30 each year during the birthing cycles.

Kept in a natural state with minimal development, Crown Hill Park is the outgrowth of citizen concern.  When a developer proposed a high-rise commercial and residential community for 8,000 residents, local citizens moved to preserve the space around the lake and to preserve habitat.  Their efforts resulted in a well-managed park design that accommodates over 300,000 visitors annually.

The cities of Wheat Ridge and Lakewood have worked with Jefferson County Open Space on the project.  Balancing human use with resource preservation, they have accomplished much through a spectrum of recreational opportunities, environmental education, and interpretation options.  The native prairie has been restored and activities fit hand-in-glove with the intent of the sanctuary.

Recreational activities include picnicking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, walking, roller blading, jogging, and fishing.  Over six miles of trails are available at Crown Hill Park and offer many safe trail uses.  More than half of the trails are paved, forming two major loops.  A mile-long fitness course is located along the paved trails at the south end of the park.

In the nature preserve, over a half mile of ADA-accessible trail is also available.  And at the southwest corner of the park, there are horse trails and inviting facilities such as a horse exercise arena, two horse-trailer parking spaces, and a horse hitching rail near the restroom.
