Small Town, Big Ranch Homes in Kiowa Colorado

A unique small town featuring large ranches and horse properties, Kiowa lies in Denver-Aurora metro area of Colorado real estate.  This makes properties in Kiowa convenient to all amenities in the Denver, Castle Rock, and Colorado Springs.

Yet homebuyers look to Kiowa’s setting and glorious elbow room. Residents consider their homes in Kiowa to be retreats from the buzz of these metropolitan areas. For one, Kiowa real estate offers unlimited outdoor recreation. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains forms the western views here in Elbert County. In Kiowa, the trails and lakes cover 6,378-foot elevations. In an hour and a half, residents can take a weekend on world-class ski slopes.

Homes in Kiowa

Within the past several years, Kiowa has experienced the same rapid growth as other communities south of Denver.  In fact the larger Elbert County comes in as fifth fastest-growing area in the United States.

Newer subdivisions promote Kiowa: Fawn Valley, Kiowa Country Ranches, Pine Crest Estates, Pine Meadows, Sun Creek Ranches, The Woodlands, and Wolf Creek. Still, Kiowa’s population stays under 1,000.

Look farther from Kiowa to semi-rural areas of Black Forest, Calhan, Elbert, Elizabeth, Ellicott, Falcon, Peyton, and Simla for similar properties.

Kiowa, the Elbert County Seat

In 1874, Elbert County selected Middle Kiowa for its county seat. As the county seat, the little town of Kiowa hosts several large community events along with a year-round calendar full of activities that bring in visitors from surrounding communities.  And they do know how to put on a fun event!  From the Kiowa Cowboy-Up Rodeo to the Kiowa Celtic Festival to the Elbert County Fair and the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo to Pancake Breakfasts and Cattlemen’s Association Dinners, there’s plenty of time for camaraderie.

Employment and Education

Many residents do commute to work in the Mile High City, at the Denver Tech Center, Inverness, or in the suburbs.  However, the children and youth enjoy the local Kiowa School District campus that houses Grades Kindergarten through 12.  The community prioritizes education and infuses community talent through a healthy volunteer program in the schools.

A Bit of History

Originally settled in 1859 along the banks of Kiowa Creek, Kiowa was a stage stop named “Wendling”. Henry Wendling ran the stage station. The route was frequented by folks traveling to growing Denver to the north and to gold fields in the Rocky Mountains.  The name was changed to Middle Kiowa during the 1860s.

The Gaigwu Peoples

Do not mix up Kiowa with Kiowa County, a compelling boating and fishing paradise 2 or 3 hours east of town. Both chose the Gaigwu (Kiowa) for namesakes. Known as the “coming out” people who believed that they entered the world through a hallow log near the Yellowstone, the Kiowa more than likely followed after the Arapaho and Cheyenne to the area.
