western atmosphere. A popular slogan calls Golden "Where the West Lives." A famous antique sign presides over Golden's Main Street, welcoming visitors with "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden."

Golden is an active outdoor town that is in keeping with the general spirit of the Rockies. The town welcomes a large number of mountain bikers, who enjoy exploring the sights around the surrounding hills, along with the kayakers who enjoy the adventures of the one-mile whitewater course. You will notice that there are more tourists in the summer, and that it's more of a college town the rest of the time. The Colorado School of Mines ranks near the top of the list of mining/engineering schools in the nation.

There are mostly single family homes in Golden with few condo or townhomes units. The low end of home prices start around $185,000 and go up to $500,000. Applewood, Genesee, Mesa Meadows, Wild Plum Farm, Mount Vernon, and Meadow Ridge Estates are some of the neighborhoods located just outside of the Golden city limits. While the average home price is about $400,000, there are several high-end neighborhoods with luxury homes that range up to $6,000,000.

The Golden schools are part of the Jefferson County School District. The State of Colorado Accountability School Reports ranks Golden schools as generally High to Excellent.

Whether one's visiting Coors Brewery, hiking, or rock climbing, Golden offers fun things to do no matter what you're interested in. There is something for every resident and visitor in Golden. The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra is in residence at the Bunker Auditorium at the Colorado School of Mines' Green

Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Center, and has been performing there since 1953. There is also the Foothills Art Center, a nationally recognized art exhibitor that is located inside a beautiful historic church. Golden is home to two groups that perform live theater, one of which is the Heritage Square Music Hall, which opened in 1986 and is one of only two dinner theater venues in the Denver metropolitan area, and the other is the Miners Alley Playhouse, a dramatic performance theater that has been open since 2001. Golden has more museums per capita than any other town in the state, including the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Colorado Railroad Museum, Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum, Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum, Golden Pioneer Museum, Astor House Hotel Museum, and the Clear Creek History Park.
