Highlands Ranch is conveniently located just to the south of C-470, Denver's outer belt, and only minutes away from Interstate 25, Denver's large north-south interstate artery. In 2006 the population of Highlands Ranch, Colorado was around 92,000 and there were approximately 3,300 apartments and 28,500 homes in Highlands Ranch. The expansion of the Highlands Ranch community is expected to be completed some time after 2015. When completed the population of Highlands Ranch, Colorado should reach 100,000 residents and real estate consisting of 36,700 homes.
Highlands Ranch has lots of trails and acres of natural land and parks where you can take part in a variety of recreational activities. For instance, Civic Green Park in Town Center boasts a shaded grandstand for performances, paths, picnic shelters and public fountains for those hot summer days! The Big Book Cove was recently completed and is a play area for children of all ages adjacent to the Highlands Ranch Library. Falcon, Northridge, and Redstone are the community parks and offer playgrounds, picnic areas, and athletic fields for the public. The park's user-friendly recreational enhancements include four off-leash dog parks, a park for skating, three community gardens, the nationally recognized Redstone Park Tennis Center and Tanks Park, which features an in-line hockey rink and skate park. Ranch residents can play on either of the two public golf courses, The Highlands Ranch Golf Club or The Links at Highlands Ranch. There are also four awesome recreation centers in the Highlands Ranch community - Northridge, Southridge, Eastridge and Westridge. They all offer Highlands Ranch residents a variety of fitness and leisure amenities, recreational and educational programs and sports leagues.

Besides its extensive neighborhood park system, Douglas County oversees the Highland Heritage Regional Park, which has sports fields, picnic tables and other amenities including playgrounds for the kids and more. A Back Country Wilderness Area consisting of roughly 8,200 acres has been set aside in the southern section of Highlands Ranch. This area has been preserved as protected open space, wildlife habitat improvement and outdoor recreational activities.
There are numerous local events throughout the year, including the Taste of Highlands Ranch, the Star Spangled July 4th Celebration, the Summer Concert Series, Highlands Ranch Days, Oktoberfest, and the annual hometown Holiday Celebration. There is also a host of other community events as well.
