Situated along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 6,378 feet, Kiowa real estate is convenient to all of the amenities in the Denver, Castle Rock, and Colorado Springs areas as well as unlimited outdoor recreation, including world-class skiing, only an hour and a half away.

Residents consider their homes in Kiowa to be retreats from the buzz of these metropolitan areas. Within the past several years, Kiowa Colorado has experienced the same rapid growth as other bedroom communities south of Denver. Still, there are less than a thousand residents of Kiowa CO homes.

In fact Elbert County is the fifth fastest growing area in the United States with much of the growth in subdivisions such as Fawn Valley, Kiowa Country Ranches, Pine Crest Estates, Pine Meadows, Sun Creek Ranches, The Woodlands, Wolf Creek and the surrounding areas of Black Forest, Calhan, Elbert, Elizabeth, Ellicott, Falcon, Peyton, and Simla.

Originally settled in 1859 along the banks of Kiowa Creek, Kiowa was a stage stop named "Wendling" after Henry Wendling who ran the stage station. The route was frequented by folks traveling to the growing city to the north as well as to gold fields in the Rocky Mountains. The name was changed to Middle Kiowa during the 1860s. Middle Kiowa was named the county seat of Elbert County in 1874.

As the county seat, the little town hosts several large community events along with a year-round calendar full of activities that bring in visitors from surrounding communities. And do they know how to put on a fun event! From the Kiowa Cowboy-Up Rodeo to the Kiowa Celtic Festival to the Elbert County Fair and the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo to Pancake Breakfasts and Cattlemen's Association Dinners, there's plenty of time for camaraderie.

Many residents do commute to work in the Mile High City, at the Denver Tech Center, Inverness, or in the suburbs. However, the children and youth enjoy the local Kiowa School District campus that houses Grades Kindergarten through Twelve. Education is a top community priority and the schools blend the community talents through a healthy volunteer program.

The town is not to be confused with Kiowa County, a boating and fishing paradise 2 or 3 hours to the east. Both, however, are named after the Gaigwu (Kiowa), the "coming out" people who believed that they entered the world through a hallow log near the Yellowstone, although historians agree that the Arapaho and Cheyenne were the primary tribes in the area.
