The thriving town was founded by Mary Miller in honor of her husband Lafayette Miller after the richest vein of coal in the Boulder Valley was discovered on the Miller Ranch. She platted a 150-acre town in 1888 and it was incorporated in 1889. It flourished for a half century until the demand for coal was replaced with natural gas when the town turned to agriculture. Mrs. Miller then founded a bank and became the first woman bank president in the world.
