Louisville's history is born out the early coal miners that first settled there with the opening of the first mine in August of 1877. There were many coal mines in Boulder and surrounding areas creating plenty of work which drew hundreds of immigrants from all over the country. One land owner, Louis Nawatny, platted part of his farm into a town and named it for himself in 1882. This made Louisville a totally unique kind of mining town... one that was not owned by the mining company! Miners had the ability to contribute to and participate in the running of their hometown without a mining company price fixing rents, goods and services. Mining declined and the last mine in Louisville closed in 1952.

downtown. The historic part of downtown Louisville has retained its charm with picturesque pubs and restaurants, quaint specialty shops and professional offices.

Activities abound in Louisville due in part to the 27 parks and 22 miles of trails. There are hiking and biking trails, ball parks and dog parks - 110 acres in all. There is a lovely new library, 11 tennis courts and, of course, close proximity to skiing. Louisville also has a huge recreation center with racquetball court, circuit weight room, indoor lap track, 25 meter, 6 lane pool with 160 foot water slide, senior center, cardio training, free weights, sauna, solarium, deck, hot tub and steam room just to mention a few.
