In 1859 John D. "Colonel Jack" Henderson built a settlement on Henderson Island and sold provisions to miners. The Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds is now situated on Henderson's old settlement.

The City works cooperatively with the community development, education consortium, and economic development agencies to establish future plans that include the preservation of open space and trails. With diverse employment sectors from commerce to service industries, high tech, education, and transportation, the area enjoys a stable economy and is experiencing new growth.
